Description
2023 $2 Vegemite Yellow 100 Mitey years
Australian coloured two dollar coin CIRC
Embark on a flavorful journey with the Royal Australian Mint's commemorative
Vegemite Centenary Coin Series, a delightful three-part collection marking the
iconic spread's century-long legacy.
Crafted from leftover brewers' yeast extract with an infusion of
diverse vegetable and spice additives, Vegemite emerged from the inventive mind
of Cyril Callister in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1922. As a versatile spread for
sandwiches, toast, crumpets, cracker biscuits, and a delectable filling for
pastries, Vegemite shares its essence with international counterparts like
British Marmite, New Zealand Marmite, Australian Promite, and others. Renowned
for its bold and distinctive flavor profile, Vegemite boasts salty, slightly
bitter, malty, and umami notes akin to beef bouillon, thanks to its richness in
glutamates. Beyond its taste, Vegemite proudly holds the status of being vegan,
kosher, and halal, while standing out for its high B vitamin content.
Released as part of a unique "corporate program"
partnership with Woolworths Supermarkets, these coins found their way into the
hands of eager collectors through everyday transactions. The three coins in
this series were strategically issued one week apart, contributing to the
excitement surrounding their release.
While the official release date for the yellow $2 Vegemite
Centenary coins was announced as 17 May 2023, enthusiasts were in for an early
treat as these coins made their surprise appearance in circulation a week
prior. Notably, the coins bear a "memorial" obverse, featuring the
effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the dates of her reign (1952 - 2022). This
design choice acknowledges the ongoing reign of King Charles III, anticipating
the approval of his effigy for use in Australia later in the year.
Collectors and Vegemite enthusiasts alike will cherish these coins
not only for their numismatic value but also for the flavorful tale they tell
about a spread that has become an indelible part of Australian culture over the
past century.
At the heart of this commemorative coin is a vibrant depiction of an iconic jar
of Vegemite, capturing the essence of a beloved Australian culinary tradition.
The design pays homage to a flavorful journey, with the years 1923 and 2023
elegantly positioned on the left and right sides, respectively, symbolizing a
remarkable century of Vegemite's presence in Australian culture.
Surrounding the central imagery is a dynamic yellow line adorned
with multiple letter Vs, creating a lively visual frame that celebrates the
unique and enduring appeal of Vegemite. The inscription "VEGEMITE
CENTENARY" gracefully encircles the upper rim, marking a significant
milestone in the brand's rich history.
Completing the design, the phrase "100 MITEY YEARS" is
displayed below, encapsulating a century of shared moments, culture, and the
enduring love Australians have for this iconic spread.
Please Note:
Due to an issue with the colour print on these coins, many of them are already
demonstrating moderate to major flaking of the coloured ring on
the reverse of the coin straight from the bags. This issue is
consistent across the entire release.
