These delightful two-dollar coins are a cherished part of a captivating seven-coin series released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Mr Squiggle and Friends, featuring the iconic character Mr Squiggle himself.
For generations, Australians have fondly embraced Mr Squiggle and his endearing companions: Blackboard, Bill Steamshovel, and Gus the Snail. From his celestial abode on the Moon, Mr Squiggle would embark on delightful journeys to Earth in his rocket, enchanting children with his whimsical charm and remarkable ability to transform their squiggles into imaginative drawings using his pencil nose.
Conceived by the talented cartoonist and puppeteer Norman Hetherington, the beloved children's television series Mr Squiggle graced the screens of ABC from 1959 to 1999. At its zenith, Mr Squiggle stood as one of the most beloved children's programs in Australia, receiving countless squiggles each year from enthusiastic children nationwide.
The series includes four vibrant $2 coins intended for circulation, two $1 collector's coins, and a special one-cent coinâan denomination no longer in circulation at the time of issuance.
At the heart of the coin's reverse design is the enchanting depiction of Mr Squiggle, the cherished protagonist of the ABC children's show, with his distinctive pencil nose. Encircling the design is a whimsical multi-colored ring, adding a touch of playfulness to the commemorative piece. Rockets, stars, and moons embellish the perimeter, while the show's iconic logo, "Mr SQUIGGLE," is prominently featured below the charming portrayal.
Above the central design, the inscription proudly declares the coin's value and denomination as "TWO DOLLARS." This coin not only pays tribute to the timeless joy Mr Squiggle brought into Australian households but also captures the magic and nostalgia of a cherished era in children's television.
